Another Bartending School Scam

If you have been reading my blog, you pretty much know by now how I feel about bartending schools.  Another way they try to trick you is by advertising in the help wanted ads of newspapers and craigslist.  I found this add on craigslist today.

PROFESSIONAL BARTENDER ASSOCIATION LOCATED IN BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN ________, IS HIRING FULL AND PART TIME BARTENDERS FOR LOCAL CENTRAL JERSEY BARS, CLUBS, AND RESTAURANTS, IF ACCEPTED BY US, WE WILL TRAIN YOU FOR FREE!!!! YOU JUST HAVE TO PAY $195.00 FOR YOUR CERTIFICATION AND ALCOHOL AWARENESS, THIS IS A ONE TIME OFFER, GOOD THRU MON JULY 18TH, SO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES, CALL NOW xxx-xxx-xxxx!!!!

Sounds great right?  Well guess what its a scam.  The thing that makes me laugh the most is that they are going to train you for “free”.  But as you keep reading you soon realize that all you have to pay is $195 for the “certification” and alcohol awareness.   How the hell is something free if you have to pay $195?  To get a job as a bartender YOU DO NOT NEED A CERTIFICATION!!  This is one of the biggest things bartending schools do to trick you into thinking you need to be “certified” to get a job.  You don’t. A lot of states(including here in NY) do require an alcohol awareness certification. You can simply get this yourself online or go to a  class for 20 to 30 bucks.

Another amusing thing about this ad is the fictitious “bartending association”.  This “association” is nothing more than the bartending schools itself.  It cracks me up when it states…”if we choose you…”.  Guess what.  If you have $195 bucks….they will choose you.  I promise.  Be very careful of bartending schools advertising in the help wanted ads.  If you have to pay to get a job then its not a real job.  Its just another crappy bartending school trying to suck your hard earned cash out of your pocket.

Cheers,
Pete
